THIS ISSUE BEACON’S BEAUTY QUEEN, HAYLEY SPARKES INVESTIGATES DRY SKIN REMEDIES FOR THE WINTER MONTHS & HUNTS DOWN THE BEST SKIN MOISTURISERS ON THE MARKET

Winter is here in full force and we all have to adapt to the chillier, shorter days and long dark evenings. I am a summer girl so I find it difficult to keep my spirits up when it is so cold, but I do enjoy that cosy feeling when you are in the warm all snuggled up and toasty.

Whilst we manage the cold temperatures by layering up with coats and hats, there is one key area of the body that does need some extra care in the winter months, and that is our skin! Especially our faces that are more fully exposed to the elements. A mixture of cold weather and central heating can cause havoc to our complexions, however I have some top tips and product recommendations to share with you to help your skin stay looking and feeling healthy.

DECLEOR HYDRA FLORAL LIGHT CREAM

You will have heard this many times but it is really important to stay well hydrated. Many of us simply don’t drink enough. Properly hydrated skin retains its elasticity which helps to prevent lines and wrinkles, chapped, scaly, or flaky skin. My favourite facial moisturiser is the Decleor Hydra Floral light cream. Firstly this facial moisturiser smells divine, secondly it effortlessly sinks into the skin, and lastly it really helps keep my dry/combination skin feeling smooth and supple. My top tip is to apply the size of a 5 pence piece, twice daily. A little bit really does go a long way!

SANATION NATURALIS LAVENDER PURE ESSENTIAL OIL

Keeping the rest of your skin moisturised is also really important. My top tip is to apply moisturising products straight after you dry off from the bath or shower whilst pores are still open. Central heating can suck moisture from the air so leaving a dish of water near the radiators in your home can help put moisture back into the air. You can add a couple of drops of aromatherapy oil into the water to fragrance your room. I like to use Lavender Pure Essential oil from Sanation Naturalis as lavender is known to have properties that help you to sleep.

BIO ESSENCE MULTI EFFECT BB CREAM

Even though the sun is much weaker in the winter months you still need to protect your skin from harmful rays. Look for a sunscreen or tinted moisturiser containing a minimum of factor 15 SPF protection. I wear Bio Essence Multi Effect BB cream SPF 25/PA++ which refines pores whilst providing long lasting hydration to prevent skin dryness. I love that this product contains natural flawless coverage combined with high sun protection.

KORRES WILD EXFOLIATING CLEANSER

Using a gentle face scrub will help to buff away any areas of dry skin. Products containing AHA products such as glycolic acid or lactic acid also help to exfoliate the skin by dissolving dead skin cells. I am a fan of the KORRES wild exfoliating cleanser. A natural blend of bilberry, citrus and hydroxyl acid in this product help to improve cell renewal and improve skins texture.

Hot baths are best avoided during the winter months really, as hot water dries out the skin, so quick mild showers are a better option. If you like home-made recipes, try adding a cupful of oats into a muslin bag or old pair of tights and drop into bath water to sooth dry skin. Finally a healthy, well balanced diet combined with regular exercise is great for your skin. Exercise gives your circulation a boost whilst the nutrients found within a healthy diet will benefit your skin in the long term.

That is all for this month, until next time…
